P1 Burnett confirmed, Nitijela in recess awaiting budget Nitijela January 29 unanimously approved the nomination of Harold W. Burnett to be the first Chief Justice of the Marshall Islands Supreme Court. The parliament then recessed subject to the call of the Speaker to await the FY1983 budget which the Cabinet will submit when it gets the allocation figures from the US. Finance Minister Atjang Paul said he was pleased to see the report by Acting Auditor General Don Hinton who said the Handicraft Coop had been well run by Mary Lanwi and the $10,000 appropriation for a revolving fund was returned to the government. Paul called the money a “good investment” and said the money as again available for something else.

P17 Majuro basketball boys on a roll Final score: the Majuro basketball team will represent the Marshall Islands in the Micornesian Olympics next month in Guam. Two hard-fought basketball games between the Majuro and Kwajalein contingents held in Majuro Saturday and Monday proved the young Majuro teams has what it takes to go all the way. Majuro won 80-64 and 64-59.
P19 Majuro women’s softball loses to experience The Ebeye-Kwajalein women’s softball team easily beat their Majuro counterparts in two straight games at Laura field over the weekend, 17-5 and 20-0. The difference, according to Majuro head coach Neil Rutledge, was experience and league competition that gave the visitors the edge over the local team.

P2 WASC gives CMI time A loud sigh of relief went up at CMI Wednesday this week as a fax from the US accrediting commission confirmed a six month extension for the local college. “I can breath now,” said a delighted Education Minister Wilfred Kendall, who chairs CMI’s board of regents and appeared at the mid-January Western Association of Schools and Colleges meeting in San Francisco with interim President Troy McGrath and board member Sandy Dismas.
P3 Teen pregnancy haunts high school senior girls Confirmation that teenage pregnancy continues to be a problem for the Marshall Islands can be seen in the 12 girls who were dismissed from Marshall Islands High School in recent months for being pregnant. MIHS Principal Sr. Dorothy Mook said that number is actually lower than in earlier years. The 12 were dismissed between June and December. What surprised her about the number is that in December, six senior girls were found to be pregnant. “It’s the first time for such a large number in the senior class,” she added.
P4 Land disputes hold up school projects A combination of land disputes, lack of boundary clarity and limited available land threaten to delay or derail major elementary construction work schedule for Majuro in 2006. “Some projects that are scheduled can’t move ahead until land problems are resolved,” said Tony Tomlinson, who is overseeing the design and bidding of Compact-funded construction work for the RMI government.
P10 Matson man retires Merle Kelai, Matson’s vice president for community relations, retired earlier this week after 42 years with the company. Kelai has been a fixture with Matson since it first launched container shipping service to Majuro, Kwajalein and Ebeye in the late 1970s.
