The Marshall Islands Marine Resources Authority’s new high-tech headquarters will be officially opened this Friday.

MIMRA Director Glen Joseph said he is expecting a number of VIPs from industry and regional fisheries organizations to attend the celebration of the new three-story facility in Majuro.

The entrance staircase features a large mural of a coral reef scene and, further up, a Marshallese outrigger canoe hanging from the ceiling. Those island scenes give way to large open-style work rooms looking onto Majuro lagoon. The top floor houses MIMRA’s Oceanic Division, which is heavily engaged in managing and monitoring commercial tuna fishing in the RMI 200-mile exclusive economic zone. A command center features a large four-screen TV set up that broadcasts, in real time, a Google Earth view of the Pacific island region with the location of every fishing boat identified. It presents the location of the vessels over a three-day period that is updated repeatedly throughout the day.
