P3 DeBrum cites new hospital for 50% drop in referrals
Health Services has cut its off island medical referral costs by nearly half compared to 1986, said Health Minister Tony deBrum last week. “We’re projecting a cost of about $600,000 for 1987,” he said. Last year’s cost was $1.2 million. DeBrum attributed the decline in referral costs to improvements in hospital services and the policy of bringing specialist medical doctors in to treat a larger number of patients instead of sending a few patients overseas for treatment.

P1 Imata: Time is money
If Monday’s unprecedented opening ceremony is any indication, this session of Nitijela will be full of surprises. President Imata Kabua, who apparently was unhappy that the opening ceremony was not ready to begin promptly at 10am on Monday, left the capital complex and did not return for the opening, which got started at about 10:35am. Without the customary address to the Nitijela and the nation by the President, the opening was a brief 20-minute affair, with opening and closing prayers by Rev. Jude Samson, two songs by the Uliga youth choir, roll call by Clerk Joe Riklon and acknowledgments to those who joined the well-attended ceremony by Speaker Kessai Note.
P7 Mayors on map
Described as the best mayors conference ever, last week’s three-day gathering of local government heads linked the mayors with the main government agencies opening up useful national-local dialogue. Multi-Mayor and MIMRA President Mike Kabua said: “Before, you never heard much about local governments. Now, even people outside Marshall Islands know that local governments exist.”
