P1 Majuro boat channel bridge open
The Japan grant project bridge for the Marshall Islands was officially opened March 15 for motorists and will open later for small boats when the channel under the bridge is completed. Before the ribbon cutting by First Lady Emlain Kabua, there were speeches by Minister of Public Works Kunar Abner, President Amata Kabua, Irooj Joba Kabua, Nitijela Speaker Atlan Anien and Mr. K. Hioki, consultant for the Japan engineering firm for the bridge.
P1 Ebeye called ‘disaster waiting to happen’
Representative John Seiberling warned February 28 that the island of Ebeye in Kwajalein Atoll is a “disaster waiting to happen.” He said sanitary conditions were so bad that cholera could break out among its 8,000 residents and spread to American families living on the atoll’s namesake island where the US has the headquarters for an important missile testing facility. Trust Territory High Commissioner Janet McCoy said that is unlikely because Kwajalein has good sanitary facilities. She said a sewer project is under way under the RMI to improve sanitary conditions on Ebeye.
P2 Among other things
We are somewhat apprehensive in revealing this but it is true —somebody actually urinated onto one of our feet the other night at the AWC movie theater (we were wearing zoris) as we were watching an old western movie starring William Holden and Richard Widmark who were trying to steal a herd of cattle across a state border from the Yankees during the Civil War. Anyway, we want to tell the parents to tell their kids not to urinate in movie theaters. —Akio Heine

P4 Superstitious
There is an interesting aside to the signing of the letter of intent for a tuna cannery in Majuro last week. Fishermen are the sort of folks who don’t like black cats crossing their paths, and who definitely won’t walk under ladders the day their boat is leaving. As fate would have it, when Lawrence Zuanich of Z Fishing Company and Howard Zeder of the Marshall Islands Development Authority sat down to put their John Hancocks on the dotted line, it was Friday the 13th. They found an easy way out: The memo was dated March 12.
P9 Water hunters
Getting laundry done in the middle of a drought can be troublesome. A crew of youngsters was spotted carrying basins and baskets of laundry from their oceanside dwellings in Delap and heading for the lagoon side where there was water to be had for their clothes.

P1 US officials disappointed by hospital
The people of the Marshall Islands deserve better services than they are now getting at Majuro hospital, US Interior Department Director of Insular Affairs Nikolao Pula told RMI leaders Wednesday in Majuro. Pula and other US officials toured the hospital Tuesday. “…I was very disappointed,” Pula said.
P24 Nuclear Claims records archived
The Nuclear Claims Tribunal has received a grant from the Elsevier Foundation for a records preservation project. The grant will purchase a new scanner and computer that will be used to create a digital archive. Many of the records constitute evidence in support of more than $2.3 billion in unpaid compensation awards for personal injuries and property damage.
