Judges and staff from the RMI High Court, TRC and District Court joined with 17 Community Court judges from the outer islands who are in Majuro for training programs.

Seventeen Community Court judges from outer islands are engaged in a weeklong training with judges from Australia as well as RMI High Court, Traditional Rights Court, and District Court judges on issues including domestic violence, judicial ethics and court administration.

The training is sponsored by the Pacific Judicial Strengthening Initiative that is funded by New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and implemented by the Federal Court of Australia.

Topics covered include court administration, civil law, criminal law, evidence, constitutional protections, domestic violence, judicial ethics and the RMI Code of Judicial Conduct, and decision making.

Faculty include Dr. Livingston Armytage and Judge Jane Patrick, both from Australia, RMI District Court Judges, TRC judges, and court staff. Chief Justice Carl Ingram and Judge Colin Winchester come in to advise and assist when available, said Clerk of Courts Ingrid Kabua.

Next week the Regional Rights Resource Team (RRRT) of the Pacific Community (SPC) will be conducting a two-day training on domestic violence for the outer island judges.
