Since her first day working with local patients at the Majuro hospital last Wednesday, visiting Ophthalmologist Dr. Shih-Wen Wang has screened approximately 101 patients as of Tuesday, with 22 pending surgery cases.

Hospital staff assisting Dr. Wang said she had three confirmed surgeries scheduled for Tuesday alone.

Dr. Wang is from the Taipei Medical University Shuang-Ho Hospital and is in Majuro through the Ministry of Health and Human Services’ partnership with the Taiwan Health Center in Majuro.

The swarming numbers of patients seeking eye care was so overwhelming that hospital staff had to turn away people with the exception of emergency-like cases.
