P1 Bank of Guam opening on Ebeye
The Bank of Guam will open its Ebeye branch on February 13. Bank of Guam President Jesus Leon Guerrero is coming to Majuro this weekend and then will go to Ebeye for the opening.
P3 Entertainment center to open
Chuji Chutaro’s new Likrok Restaurant and Entertainment Center isn’t much to look at from the outside. Some say it looks more like a warehouse than an entertainment center or a restaurant. But as the philosophers have observed, “seeing is deceiving…” Step inside this box and you’ll find yourself nodding your head in agreement that this is a classy place. It may be Majuro’s classiest nightspot once it opens officially on February 18. —Akio Heine

President George Bush declared Majuro and four outer atolls disaster areas on Saturday, setting the stage for substantial US and Marshall Islands government assistance to families who experienced storm damage from Typhoon Axel.
P6 Capital building work back on track
The PII/McConnell Dowell joint venture completed the process of jacking up the capital building onto 341 piles last week, paving the way for the resumption of construction work. Construction workers used hydraulic lifts to jack the building up inch-by-inch so that it is now completed supported by the 341 reinforced piles that were driven into the ground in and around the administration building at depths up to 110 feet. It has taken 14 months of tedious remedial work to get construction back on track.
P18 Most program grads in school or working
More than 80 percent of students who have participated in the MIHS vocational work-study program are in school or working, according to a follow up survey of the students by the high school. An on-the-job training program involving high school seniors is drawing raves from local businessmen who say that they are so impressed with the quality of work produced by the seniors that they virtually always offer them full time jobs after they complete school.
P21 Lack of rain forces RRE to retool
The lack of rainfall in Majuro forced RRE’s Pacific Pure Water company to halt production of drinking water late last week. Bottled water was a hot item in stores and by Saturday morning there wasn’t a drop of PPW water for sale anywhere.
P24 Hawks, Bullets take close victories
The Golden Jets continue to coast toward the league title with no team able to give them competition in the basketball league. The Majuro powerhouse flexed its muscles in an 87-45 runaway over Rietao last week. Vincent controlled the boards with 15 caroms and 21 points, and Bolal scored 12 to lead the Jets. Rita Hawks showed why they are the number two team in the league, defeating rival Nobody 82-61. Hawks’ Rantly continue his league leading scoring by dropping in a cool 30 points, mostly on zig-zag moves to the bucket that left a slew of defenders helpless in his wake. Nobody’s Renny led with 17 points, and Hackney had 13.
