Concert highlights youth gathering

A total of 41 groups, representing islands in RMI and locations of Marshallese throughout Hawaii and the mainland US, performed choir songs at the closing of the United Church of Christ Youth Convention in Majuro Sunday June 22. Photo: Chewy Lin.

Every two years, the United Church of Christ or Jarin Rarik Doon convenes its youth convention, bringing over a thousand youth together for two weeks of bible studies, activities and fellowship.

Youth convention year also means the always much-awaited concert night on the closing Sunday of the event.

Last Sunday’s concert night was run with military-like precision, with each group limited to three songs and one group following another within a minute or two.

Still, despite a start before 7pm Sunday and a well-organized program, the final of 41 groups didn’t wrap up the concert night until 5:30am the next morning.

The event was bookended by Likiep, which kicked off the night, and Kwajalein, which wrapped it up just before sunrise.
