P1 New plane for AMI
People knew it was coming because of the numerous announcements but few expected it to fly past so quietly and quickly. It was the BAC 748 plane which is on loan to Air Marshall Islands until its own is completed in December this year.
P1 Kwajalein occupation continues
The Kwajalein landowners occupying Kwajalein and other islands that are part of the Kwajalein Missile Range have increased, according to Senator Ataji Balos and other leaders. Latest rough estimates: Enmat 60, Murle 25, Kwaj 420, Kuror 13, Kijinbi 17, Roi-Namur 230, Enewetak, Kirin and Kumle about 203. Leaders of the Kwajalein Atoll Corporation say the protest sail-in is far from over. They say they don’t see an end to the dispute unless and until the landowners’ demands are met by the government. A meeting was held July 1 at Camp Hamilton on Kwajalein with the protesters and President Amata Kabua and his Cabinet, but nothing came out from the meeting, according to Balos. —Akio Heine

P3 Tuna cannery to aid seiners
The Marshall Islands is looking hard at the possibility of establishing a tuna cannery in Majuro. The idea appears to be motivated in part by what one RMI official sees as a need to better exploit the revenue generating capabilities of the government’s two joint venture purse seine operations. According to Steve Muller, general manager of the Marshall Islands Development Authority, the government’s two purse seiners are breaking even and paying back their loans to the US National Marine Fisheries Service.
P24 RMI flag raised over USP
On May 23, the flag of the RMI took its place beside the flags of 11 other member nations of the University of the South Pacific. Representing the RMI at the occasion was Minister of Transportation and Communications Kunio Lemari.

P23 Want to become a Hawaiian hulk?
A group of guys just having fun paddling canoes after work are seriously looking for more paddlers to race with. Dr. Neal Palafox has been volunteering his time to teach them how the pros in Hawaii do it. If you’re interested, call “keeper of the sacred paddles” Scott Stege.
P28 Excitement builds
“They are only one marlin away.” That’s the constant thought of Anton deBrum as the Marshalls Billfish Club organizes their annual Marshall Islands Fishing Tournament which is going to be the main event of this weekend. This is the final event in the nine-contest tourney series that started last September and it will decide if deBrum will retain the prestigious President’s Cup or, if not, who will be the new cup holder and probably the Marshalls champion to go to the 33rd Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament next month. Anglers Ronnie Reimers and Rudy Aliven hope to take it from him this weekend.

P12 Words to numbers
Auditors, said Speaker Alvin Jacklick at Monday’s APIPA conference opening, are unique individuals who like to work with numbers, but don’t like to write sentences. This is a big contrast with the Speaker. “I hate numbers,” Jacklick said. “When I make a mistake on my account, I end up bouncing checks. But since the LUA (land use agreement) was signed, I love numbers.”
