Japan Ambassador Kazunari Tanaka handed over two excavators, two wheeloaders, one dump truck, and one high-pressure cleaning truck to the Ministry of Public Works, Utilities and Infrastructure, and the Wotje, and Jaluit local governments.

The machines that were given out, according to Ambassador Tanaka, are part of the program for social and economic development, which aims to combat climate change and enhance infrastructure. This is part of Japan’s effort to “contribute to the enhancement and promotion of capabilities related to infrastructure maintenance and development,” said Tanaka.

Rostina Morris, the mayor of Jaluit, expressed gratitude to Ambassador Tanaka and the Japanese government, stating that equipment was a vital “gift” for the islands.

Speaking on behalf of President Hilda Heine and the national government was Minister of Public Works Thomas Heine. Heine thanked the Japanese Ambassador and said that the donations are necessary due to the lack of resources on the outer islands to respond to natural disasters.

In a related handover ceremony, Japan Ambassador Tanaka and Acting Mayor for Majuro Randy Jack exchanged notes of appreciation during the christening of two heavy equipment machines at Majuro Atoll City Hall last Friday.

Majuro Atoll Local Government and Japanese officials witnessed the handover of the 15-ton dump truck and an excavator.

Ambassador Tanaka wished the equipment and services to be provided would bring peace of mind to the people. Tanaka said the machinery are worth 600 million yen, which is about $4 million, donated under the Japan Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects scheme.

The grant included two experts from Japan who flew in to provide operational training for the machines.

“We pledge to use this heavy equipment wisely and for the benefit of all,” Acting Mayor Randy said in his remarks. “Let us work together to build a better, more resilient future for the people of Majuro Atoll.”
