With the landfill at Batkan well beyond its maximum capacity for garbage, the RMI government is planning to develop a new landfill on the ocean side reef between the MEC tank farm and the bridge.

Majuro Atoll Waste Company General Manager Halston deBrum confirmed the plan for the new landfill facility, but added: “The timetable has not been established at this time.

“We are hoping to get the detailed design of the landfill later this year.”

DeBrum explained that the Cabinet has approved Compact infrastructure money to fund the new landfill project.

The Asian Development Bank is funding the planning part of the landfill project under the Integrated Urban Services and Resilience Improvement Project, he said.
