P1 RepMar angling for lucrative ship registry
A bill to establish the first foreign ship registry in Micronesia moved toward approval in the Nitijela this week, following Cabinet endorsement and a public hearing Friday. The possibility of this venture producing millions of dollars in revenue for the Marshall Islands was explained by businessman Howard Zeder, the prime architect of the plan.

P4 Ben a winner
Last Saturday, Ben Kiotak beat 15 other boats in the poor man’s bottom fishing contest. The Drebij Wor Club has a tournament about once a month and everyone has a lot of fun. Roland Jorkan caught the largest fish and Vincent Reimers won the shark award.

P7 Coffee break time
The morning cup of coffee is part of custom everywhere in the Marshall Islands, and that includes Kili Island, home the Bikinians. Owner Edwin Mork’s Kili Coffee Shop is a popular stopping point for people on the tiny island. There’s always some piping hot coffee and plenty of news to pass the time. When photographer Shimada Kousei stopped by, the guys enjoying coffee and morning conversations: Peter Muller, Dretin Jokdru, Joji Johnson, Tinlok Anjerok, Tembo Lewis, Typhoon Jamore, Thompson Johnson, and Edwin Mork.

P10 President honored by MBC
President Amata Kabua was honored last week when the Marshalls Billfish Club awarded him the first lifetime membership for his long-time support of the Club’s activities. The six who will represent MBC at the Hawaii International Billfish Tournament in Kona later this month was also announced by the club: Wally Milne, Kenneth Kramer, Samuel Laibinmij, Victor Milne, Wayne Collier, and Ray Walker.

P1 Heart attack drink sparks new industry
A nin juice workshop wrapped up Friday, with a group of Majuro residents agreeing to form the Marshall Islands Nin Growers and Producers Association. The 15 participants expressed a great deal of optimism about the potential for developing a nin juice industry in the Marshall Islands. Fiji businessman David Kahn led the workshop. Kahn said he has built is business from $40,000 to $7 million in just three years. “If I can do it, so can you,” he said.

P1 Prisoners at war
Six days after a melee in Majuro jail injured several prisoners and policemen, a group of prisoners who instigated the fight continued to be handcuffed on the stairway of the fire department building next to the police station. Police spokesman Captain Eric Jorbon told the Journal this group of prisoners was being isolated from the main prison population while an investigation into Thursday’s eruption of violence is conducted.

P24 Amon and Reno win the biggest fish in Urok comp
Majuro Atoll Urok Club held its first bottom fishing derby of the season with 10 boats taking part in the August 14 tournament. The new club was established on May 17 this year and is moving into high gear. In the biggest fish category Marshall Islands Development Bank Capt. Amon Tibon and mate Reno Tibon had the biggest with a 20 pounder, second went to Jide Capt. Jack Ading with Carlwin Labin and their 18 pounder, Jakur-Mej Capt. Samuel Langrine and mates Jackie Joseph and Jeje Jorren brought in a 10 pounder rounding off the biggest fish.

P27 Marshallese sue Hawaii
Marshall Islanders filed suit in Honolulu Monday in an effort to block the state of Hawaii from cutting back medical services to islanders from the three Compact nations who cannot pay for treatment. They say the action by Hawaii violates anti-discrimination provision of the United States constitution.
