The last time this particular lot at the MEC property in Delap was empty was about 45 years ago. This property housed the Marshalls Energy Company’s first power plant from its opening in 1982 until work began on its demolition in early 2025.
The lot is being cleared to make way for a new power plant building and new generators. Construction of the building is expected to get underway in the coming weeks with a tentative completion date of the end of this year.
In other Marshalls Energy Company news, MEC raised its power tariffs June 1, increasing business electric rates to over 50 cents per kilowatt hour for the first time ever.
The rates were “announced” on MEC’s website with a table titled “Electricity Tariff Rates” as of June 1, 2025.
This means that $100 will now give customers 242 kWh of power, whereas before the rate hike, a residential customer received 263.8 kwh for this amount. This translates for a $10 purchase to 26.3 kWh before and 24.1 kWh with the new rates.
The change in power costs are:
- Residential from 37.9 cents to 41.2 cents per kWh.
- Commercial from 46.3 cents to 50.7 cents per kWh.
- Government from 47.3 cents to 49.7 cents per kWh.
The June 1 price hike follows a similar rate increase on August 1 last year, when power costs went up. At that time, the rates increased: Residential from 34.6 cents to 37.9 cents per kWh; commercial from 43 cents to 46.3 cents; and government from 44 cents to 47.3 cents.
