Aur Atoll has a new mayor.

Fred Bukida took the oath of office Monday afternoon at the Majuro courthouse. His swearing in by TRC Judge Nixon David before a courtroom gallery packed with family and friends ends a period of uncertainty after the special election that ended with a court complaint from his main competitor after a one-vote loss.

The subsequent recount brought Bukida’s win margin to two votes. The result of the recount became final and official earlier this month, paving the way for Bukida to be sworn in for office. Aur has been without a mayor for well over a year following the death of the late Mayor Risen Hansen.

During the oath ceremony, Mayor Fred’s wife, Neiar Kabua, held the Bible. Rev. Russell Edwards was there to bless the event, and Iroojlaplap for Ratak Boklon Zackious spoke as well. Others in attendance included Aur Nitijela Member Hilda Heine.

The 50 or so well wishers enjoyed food and refreshments following the official event.
