P1 Dispute delays N-study
The Rongelap people have rejected a scientist recommended by the Marshall Islands and United States governments because of his ties to the US Department of Energy, said Rongelap Senator Jeton Anjain. A critical re-study of the safety of Rongelap is at issue, and the US Congress has agreed to provide funds for ‘independent’ scientists to evaluate the habitability of Rongelap, which the Rongelapese left two years ago. The study has waited while RepMar and Rongelap officials debate who will conduct the studies.

P1 Kenneth wins marlin-filled MBC tourney
The end of the El Niño weather cycle brought some of the best sports fishing in years to the Marshalls Billfish Club’s 17th annual two-day tournament that concluded Saturday. Eleven marlin were caught over the two days by 23 trolling boats, including a 402 pound whopper that won the tournament for Kenneth Kramer. At the MBC awards ceremony, the emcee routinely recognized anglers for the size of the fish they caught. So emcee Kirt Pinho got an appreciative chuckle when he called Kenneth to come forward to collect his trophy for the “biggest father, 360 pounds.”

P11 Bwiji is the man
Bwiji Aliven may not have had one of his best fishing tournaments this past weekend, but he became the most rewarded fisherman in recent years. At the Marshalls Billfish Club awards ceremony, Aliven received the President’s Cup, the Atjang Paul Memorial Trophy, and the Matson Perpetual Trophy.

P3 Body mass-ive? Yes
A second Father’s Day for 75 Majuro men proved to be a wakeup call. The Ministry of Health sponsored its fourth Father’s Day Health Workshop at the ICC on June 30 — and screening conducted for the participants showed the severity of preventable health problems facing Marshall Islanders. A total of 67, or 90 percent, of the 75 participants were either overweight or obese. Of the 75 tested, 56 were pre-diabetic or diabetic. “The data is very important for these men to know because it shows how many of them are at risk for serious diseases,” said Health official Ione deBrum.

P5 Bar yoke to the seniors from Maryknoll

P12 Two pounds takes it
Just two pounds made the different between being a glorious winner and a depressed runner up. On Friday, Team Kirtake, skippered by Captain Ronnie Reimers, weighed in a 335 pound marlin. On Saturday, Team Miss Krista, skippered by Captain Nicky deBrum, weighed in a 337 pound marlin to win the annual two-day MBC July tournament biggest marlin category.
