P1 Sen. Imada Kabua opposes Compact
Senator Imada Kabua (Kwajalein) became the first senator or government official to formally announce that he is against the Compact of Free Association and that he will campaign against it. On January 27 Kabua said he is taking this position is not as a member of the Nitijela or on behalf of the Kwajalein people but for himself as a citizen of the Marshall Islands.

P1 Sen. Henchi Balos blasts US role
Senator Henchi Balos (Bikini-Kili) on January 25 expressed dissatisfaction with the US administration of the Trust Territory and the failure of High Commissioner Janet McCoy to meet last week with Nitijela members and the Bikini people living on Ejit Island. He noted that McCoy had a lot of time to meet with other people including the public service and local businessmen but not Nitijela.

P4 Water on two hours per day
The government water will not be turned on today. It was on yesterday for two hours. Yesterday Public Works Secretary Noel Bigler explained that the water will be on every other day for two hours. If the water is on only one hour per day there is insufficient pressure in Rita to provide any water to that part of town.

P7 Theological College elections
The student body of the Marshalls Theological College recently elected officers. Those elected are: Helmi Laidran, president, succeeding Ruten Joel; Ronald Alfred, Vice President; Rensiper Lalimo, re-elected as secretary-treasurer; and Boaz David re-elected as song leader.

P1 It’s a go
It took 14 months to complete but the remedial repair work on the capital building in Majuro is set to finish in a matter of days and construction to resume shortly, said Marshall Islands Development Authority Manager Howard Zeder. More than 400 pilings were driven into the ground under the two building complex to provide a firm foundation. The partially completed administration building will be “hacked up” onto the new supports beginning next week. Once this is completed, construction by the PII/McConnell Dowell joint venture will resume again.

P1 Waylon wins bronze in Oz
Marshall Islands wrestler Waylon Muller won a bronze medal in last week’s Oceania Championships in Australia, competing against wrestlers out of his normal weight class. He was working to lose 20 pounds to get to his normal 84KG weight class (about 185 pounds). But when he weighed in last week, he was four ounces over the limit, forcing him to complete against wrestlers in the 211 pound weight class.

P3 Poor showing at induction
At last Wednesday’s opening session of the Nitijela induction workshop, 16 of 33 members participated, including President Chris Loeak and Speaker Donald Capelle. The many empty chairs at the Nitijela induction told the story.

P9 DOI funding supports over 4,200 employees
The RMI government received the fourth largest amount of funding from the US Office of Insular Affairs in FY2010 that paid for 1,872 government workers, or about 75 percent of the RMI government’s workforce. The report issued by the Interior Department in January says its funding directly and indirectly impacted an additional 2,343 workers in RMI, meaning that US funding supported 41 percent of the total number of people employed in RMI.
