Students from the College of the Marshall Islands and the Upward Bound program presented their semester-long work at a festival held last week at the Uliga campus. The event heralded the end of the fall semester.

“The event aims to celebrate student resilience and determination,” said Library Director Verenaisi Bavadra, who made the welcome remarks on behalf of the CMI administration. Students from different departments at the college display handmade goods, recycled materials, posters, paintings, and conduct surveys, among other things.

A CMI 101 class, Section 5, shared their three-week service learning project — which involved turning trash into useful recyclable items — with the Journal.

“I didn’t know we could utilize trash into useful decorative materials,” said CMI student Lotijar Alberttar.

One of the project’s initiatives is to gather and clean unused or unclaimed water bottles so they can be used once more. The students say the water bottles will be donated to an elementary school on Arno.
