A new solar structure that could save the Marshall Islands Resort thousands of dollars a year in electricity costs is nearing completion in the hotel’s parking lot.

The project is funded by the Taiwan government and is overseen by the RMI National Energy Office.

Local firm Green Energy Solutions is performing the construction and installation work at the Resort.

Green Energy Solutions is partnering with the Taiwan-based solar company Speedtech Energy.

“This is the same team that collaborated on the Public School System solar carpark project,” said William Reiher, owner and CEO of Green Energy Solutions.

The current project will only cover the east side of the Resort’s parking lot.

“There are two recipient entities/offices of this grant’s solar project this year,” said Reiher. Marshall Islands Resort, plus another to be confirmed by the National Energy Organization.”

He said installation of the hotel’s 32 kilowatt solar system was 95 percent complete as of late last week.

“These systems have been designed to be off-grid with batteries but have the option of being grid-tied should the entity choose, which is now a possibility under MEC’s new regulations,” he said.

If the Resort uses the 32 kilowatt system to its maximum capacity, it “can save up to $2,400 per month off the Marshall Islands Resort’s electricity bill,” Reiher added.
