P1 Frequent generator problems darken capital
The old power plant was acting like it was just about ready to give up this past week.This came just as the Tobolar copra plant generator decided to lose oil to one cylinder causing significant damage. The result has been blackouts for about 48 hours in some areas used to regular power. Assorted breakdowns during the week left the island so short of power that not even one of the three feeder lines could be supplied in its entirety.
P1 Marshalls court certified
The High Court of the Trust Territory has transferred legal jurisdiction to the court system of the Marshall Islands. The transfer was effected on March 3 in a letter from Chief Justice Harold Burnett to the Trust Territory High Court to John Lanham, Chief Justice of the Marshall Islands High Court.

P3 Good food, good friendship: Must be Arno
The Arno fishery development project was officially turned over to the Marshall Islands government last week. The $4.6 million project will be operated by the Ministry of Resources and Development through the Marshall Islands Marine Resources Authority.
P9 Marshall Islands joins USP
The Marshall Islands has become the 12th member the University of the South Pacific. In due course, a university center will be established in the Marshall Islands.
P24 Study: Marshallese women face prejudice
Females in the Marshall Islands appear to have less opportunities in the workforce than do males, according to a recent study by the Office of Planning and Statistics. In education, the report shows that while women hold three senior administrative positions, among teaching staff, only 31 percent are female. At the principal and vice principal level, only six percent are female.

P1 Japan death toll rises
The devastation in Japan nearly defies human understanding, with probably tens of thousands dead, more than half a million people in shelters, several nuclear reactors releasing radiation as workers attempt to halt nuclear meltdowns, and millions of homes without power and water. What wasn’t shattered by the biggest earthquake in Japan’s history Friday afternoon was pulverized by a tsunami that wiped out entire towns. It took just nine minutes from the time of the earthquake until the waves hit land.
P11 Staying away from RMI
The number of people traveling to the Marshall Islands dropped to a 20-year low in 2010, according to visitor statistics collected by the RMI government. A total of 4,563 people came to the Marshall Islands in 2010 — barely half of the number who came to RMI in 2004, the best visitor year for visitors since statistics began being kept in 1989 by the Marshall Islands Visitors Authority.
P20 TB level steady, leprosy worsens
“Tuberculosis is still a major health problem in the Republic of the Marshall Islands,” said the FY2009 Ministry of Health report. It notes that RMI is one of the US-affiliated islands with high levels of TB. Meanwhile, leprosy problems are worsening, the report said.
