An emerging social media star is making waves on TikTok with his comedic content and engaging videos.

Matthew Jor, of the Ri-Kwajalein clan, has become a popular influencer on the platform, with over 5,200 followers and 81,800 likes. Most of his followers, according to him, are female and Marshallese residing in the islands.

Currently a business major at the College of the Marshall Islands, Matthew rose to prominence after a video filmed about Lijimu went viral, catapulting him into the spotlight.

His journey into TikTok was driven by a search for purpose, a passion for entertainment, and a newly discovered talent.“Our elders had a saying: let’s be happy since life is short,” he said. “I don’t do TikTok to challenge anyone — I do it to bring joy to those who are sad or feel lonely.”

One of his most viral videos, humorously expressing his reluctance to attend school, garnered 349,000 views, 3,806 reactions, and 301 shares.

The 24-year-old has a meticulous process for creating content. Before uploading, he reviews each video multiple times to ensure it’s entertaining and suitable for his audience.

Like many influencers, Matthew has faced challenges, particularly dealing with negative comments. Yet, he also highlighted the rewards of his work. TikTok compensates him up to $100 per month based on his follower count and viewership.

Fans have also shown their support through donations via Cash App, with his largest single contribution reaching $170.

Matthew told the Journal that while social media careers aren’t widely promoted in schools or by the government, he believes they are both relevant and valuable in today’s world. “I believe social media as a career should be encouraged in schools,” he said. “It’s a way to inspire and spread positive messages throughout the community.”

Matthew recognized the powerful potential of social media to connect people. He described feeling deep appreciation and love from followers he’s never met. One memorable example was a Marshallese fan visiting from the mainland who invited him to share a meal. Also Matthew gets the opportunity to collaborate with other famous Marshallese. He said his next collaboration will be with famous singer and artist Limauwe.

He advises all those who are eager but nervous to do social media to be “strong, courageous and patient to reach the top.”
