P1 President heads to Washington; Some Kwajalein landowners already there
President Amata Kabua left last night headed for Washington, DC and talks with US officials on increased assistance to Kwajalein Atoll where the US conducts strategic missile tests. Kwajalein landowners have said they will spread out from their occupation in camps on 1 October if there is no agreement. The landowners have not left their camps as demanded by the US. Alice Balos, wife of Kwajalein Senator Ataji Balos, said from Honolulu her husband and half the landowners left for Washington last Friday. She added that the rest of the group was due to leave September 28. P2 Among other things
While it may be true that smoking cigarettes or unemployment can be hazardous to your health, there are reasons to believe that going to the movies here can be just as hazardous to your health — mental and physical. By physical hazard, we mean that one of these days one or some of us movie goers to any of the three local movie theaters may come out like fried chicken for the simple reason there are no fire escape exits and two have only one door. By mental hazard, maybe a sample of typical movie titles will you some ideas: “To Kill with Intrigue,” “Fists of Fury” and “The Big Brawl.” These movies are not good for the minds of kids who frequent the movie theaters especially during Sunday matinees. —Akio Heine

P1 Tax law revamped
A return to gross revenue tax is expected to triple revenues. The Nitijela has voted to do away with the (net profit) tax law, which has been in effect since October 1989 and re-enact a modified version of the “gross revenue tax” law which was in effect from 1979 until 1989. “Many businessmen like the new law,” said Chief of Revenue Toke Sawej, “because they were having trouble filling out the forms for filing net income tax.” Under the new law, taxes on net income of businesses and from rental of property are discontinued. The tax on corporate profits is also eliminated. In their place, only gross revenue … will be taxed. The old (net profit tax) was producing only about $800,000 a year in revenues. The new law (is forecast) to produce around $3 million a year.

P7 Gerald is new Vice Speaker
Arno Senator Gerald Zackios was elected Vice Speaker of the Nitijela Monday, replacing retiring Vice Speaker Alik Alik. At the start of business Monday, Majuro Senator David Kramer nominated Zackios for the post. Zackios stood in last week as Acting Speaker for three days while Speaker Alvin Jacklick was sick. Although Zackios was the only candidate, an obligatory secret ballot vote was held, with Zackios gaining all of the votes except for four ballots that contained no name and one each for Namu Senator Kaiboke Kabua and Senator David Kabua. Meanwhile, both Alik and Senator Wilfred Kendall resigned earlier this month and each received a $25,000 check for early retirement.
