President Hilda Heine congratulated 77 students and teachers who were awarded the fifth Taiwan-RMI Presidents scholarship at MIR’s Melele Room last Wednesday.
Minister of Education, Sports and Training Gerald Zackios told the recipients that their achievements are a testament to their efforts and determination. “You have proven to the country that you have overcome in your educational journey,” he said. “You are a bright star to our nation.”
ROC Taiwan Ambassador Steve Hsia said the awardees “demonstrated your dedication to your studies.”
Ambassador Hsia highlighted the importance of education, stating that “it is the foundation of sustainable development and the driver of progress.”
Hsia added that Taiwan President Lai Ching-te announced an additional $500,000 to the scholarship, which was launched in 2017. The scholarship was launched during President Heine’s first term in office following an agreement with then-Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen, with Taiwan putting up $1 million for the program.
During the ceremony, a handover of laptops and color pencils was presented to President Heine, Minister Zackios, and Taiwan Ambassador Hsia, which will go towards the Public School System.
“The government of the Republic of the Marshall Islands extends its appreciation to Taiwan for this generous contribution,” said a statement from the Office of the President. “And congratulates all awardees for their dedication and achievements. Jeramman to the students and teachers for their outstanding academic performance!”
