The Alele Museum in combination with the public library is preparing phase one of a plan to develop a permanent national archives based in Majuro. P1 Hospital shutdown
All medical and health services in Majuro, Ebeye and the outer islands — except for emergency services — will be shut down Friday unless a crisis between the Public Service Commission and the Ministry of Health is ironed out before then. Health Secretary Donald Capelle made the announcement Wednesday this wee, saying that all supervisory personnel at both Majuro and Ebeye hospitals were behind the move because PSC inaction is frustrating the ability of the ministry provide quality health care to the Marshall Islands.

P3 National symbol?
There amidst old wheels, propane tanks, vehicles and refrigerators at the Delap Dock where it has been since its return from New Zealand nearly a year and a half ago sits the venerable Enewetak walap (voyaging canoe) — a canoe that is the talk of the South Pacific for its speed and sleekness but in its home in the Marshall Islands is apparently somewhat less valued. Plans are afoot to begin making needed repairs so the canoe can be readied in just six weeks to lead a flotilla of Pacific canoes at the millennium celebration in New Zealand.

P4 New USP center turned over

P1 Rongelap’s gems
The first pearl harvest in the Marshall Islands in many years has stimulated renewed interest among leaders on remote outer islands that the industry remains vialb.eThe harvest this week from Rongelap Atoll of 1,300 pearls valued at about $20,000 is small compared the multi-million dollar export in French Polynesia and the Cook Islands. But black lip pearl oyster expert Tyrone Tapu, who manages his own pearl farm in French Polynesia, said he was impressed with the small harvest at Rongelap. “Looking at the range of colors from the harvest, they are surprisingly good,” he said. “These have the same colors as at my farm.”

P4 PAC pushes for better public performance
The Marshall Islands government should reform or stop subsidizing the worst performing public entities, said a hard-hitting report issued last week by the Nitijela’s Public Accounts Committee. Following three weeks of hearings involving virtually every ministry, agency and enterprise, the committee chaired by Ujae Senator Frederick Muller issued a 12-page report that concluded bluntly: “The Committee is concerned that almost all public entities are under-performing or are not performing.”
