Fourteen teams entered Saturday’s Biggest Qualifying Billfish Fishing Tournament, but the billfish went into hiding in the deep blue ocean with only two marlin being caught and released by Team Lotujo captained by Danny Paul.
This results in the Jakie Jacob Memorial or Majuro Day Biggest Fish being held over to the next derby and the Biggest Qualifying Billfish pot of $1,400 being carried over to the annual July tournament.
According to a media release from the Marshalls Billfish Club, the tags earned the team 500 President’s Cup points.
Meanwhile, Team Jinekjej (Captain Bevan Wakefield) caught the biggest qualifying yellowfin tuna at 109 pounds, while Team Wildside (Captain Brian Kirk) caught the biggest wahoo at 28 pounds. The Wildside team then tied with Team Li-Manbwine (Captain John Aister) for their 24-pound barracuda.
Team Kirtake (Captain Ronnie Reimers) brought home the biggest mahi mahi at 22 pounds.
