Windy and sometimes rainy conditions prevailed during last weekend’s Kwajalein Cup outrigger canoe race. But that didn’t dampen the turnout of canoes, only made it more challenging for the captains to demonstrate their skills.
First place canoe was “Nana” built and captained by Clancy Takia, an experienced canoe builder at the Waan Aelon in Majel program in Majuro.
Clancy had been the Kwajalein Cup winner for the last few years. This year he went home with $12,000.
He also built the second place canoe “Limanman” and his brother Kimi Takia sailed her – adding another $3,000 to Clancy’s pocket.
Third place was “Aiyana,” captained by Nemo Yokib. Canoe owned by Irooj Albert Alberttar. Third place won $2,000.
