A pilot project — “Chicken Coop Broiler & Layer Pilot Project” — launched last week in Laura with a two-day training program.

The workshop was held at Laura Community Center located at Jeirok last Thursday and Friday.

During the workshop, people of Laura community showed their appreciation to International Organization for Migration, CMI Land Grant, Laura Farmer’s Association, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Commerce and Majuro Atoll Local Government. MALGov Executive Councilman Jina David is the prime mover behind the effort to engage the local community in an income generating development opportunity.

The project is fully funded by IOM.

The purpose of the project is to help Laura women raise their own chickens to produce eggs, giving them food options as well as opportunity to sell eggs to the local market where the price of an egg is very expensive.

Workshop leaders said this will help the community and even the country as a whole to make our own eggs and chicken company.

On Thursday, the CMI Land Grant group explained the steps and how to use supplies and materials to properly grow chicken layers.

On Friday, the workshop group went to CMI Land Grant farm at the Arrak Campus to see the area and get practical hands-on experience.

All the materials and supplies will be provided by CMI Land Grant and IOM.

CMI Land Grant will provide the chickens and IOM will provide the materials.

By the second week of January next year, IOM-provided materials will be given to Executive Councilman Jina so that he can distribute it to the ladies that signed up for this project.
