Greenpeace was recognized prior to departing the RMI by President Hilda Heine and the National Nuclear Commission.
Representatives of Greenpeace joined the President and her Cabinet ministers for a meeting last week before Greenpeace’s vessel Rainbow Warrior set sail Sunday from Majuro lagoon. The Rainbow Warrior spent six weeks touring atolls in the RMI in March and April.
“The National Nuclear Commission wishes to express its profound appreciation and gratitude, aligning with the sentiments conveyed by H.E. President Dr. Hilda C. Heine and the esteemed members of the Cabinet, towards Greenpeace,” said the commission in a social media post this week.
“The NNC formally acknowledges and deeply appreciates Greenpeace’s steadfast commitment and crucial support in their vital work in fighting for justice for our lands, especially the remaining displaced people from the affected atolls from the nuclear testing program.”
The NNC recognized Greenpeace for its long-standing relationship with the Marshall Islands since it assisted the relocation of Rongelap Islanders to Mejatto Island in Kwajalein in 1985.
“Having you here in our humble shores has profoundly honored the enduring history, and the substantial relationship established forty years ago, particularly with the inhabitants of Rongelap Atoll,” the NNC said. “Once again, the NNC extends its wishes for a smooth journey home and may God’s protection be upon you all.”
