
Power consumers money will now buy less each time they purchase cash power, following MEC’s third tariff increase over the past 18 months.
The latest rate hike went into effect on February 9. It was not announced in a public way other than a post on the MEC website.
While the company puts out media releases about new projects, power outages and other MEC activities, it did not release one concerning the latest power increase.
The tariff increase raises the residential rate from 41.2 cents per kilowatt hour to 43.2 cents. Business rates increase to over 50 cents for the first time, with commercial rates increasing from 49.7 to 51.6 cents per kWh.
The government rate went from 50.7 cents to 52 cents per kWh.
Prior to the rate hike, a $100 purchase bought consumers 242.7 kWh of power. After the increase, the same amount of money buys 231.5 kWh of cash power.
Meanwhile, Majuro Water and Sewer Company this week announced it is raising its rates for fresh water and sewage services.
Fresh water services to residences will increase from $6 to $9 per 1,000 gallons. It will rise from $15 to $22.50 per 1,000 gallons for businesses and government offices.
Sanitation/sewage fees are now set at $50 a month for industrial customers and $100 a month for fisheries operations.
This announcement of the new rates was announced by MWSC in the form of an advertisement in this week’s edition of the Journal.
Salt water service at $12 a month, for residential, commercial and government, remains unchanged. Similarly, bulk fresh water delivery service remains the same.
