P1 Typhoon Pamela headed for Lae
Yesterday was Thanksgiving Day but many people bought flashlights, rain coats and lots of tins of biscuits. Perhaps they bought turkeys earlier in the week but yesterday was disaster preparation. Tropical Storm Pamela passed about 10 miles north of Majuro at about 4pm, causing damage to crops and a few roofs. As Pamela was upgraded to a typhoon, she was headed for Lib Island and Lae Atoll.

P2 Question of the week
What would you judge to be the degree of emergency if an outer island calls in with a lack of medicine but wants to talk to the senator instead of the hospital?

P7 Wotto airfield opens
Wotto joined the list of atolls with operational airfields November 21. Air Marshall Islands flew to Wotto Sunday for the first time in a combined trial landing and medical evacuation mission.

P22 Celebrating 25 years of Peace Corps
Official observance of Peace Corps Week in the Marshall Islands began 6pm Monday with a reception held at the American Embassy, Majuro, in honor of the occasion. Hosting the affair were Ambassador and Mrs. William Bodde. The keynote speaker for the evening turned out to be Oscar “The Chief” deBrum, who side-tracked into comments relative to an ongoing bet he has with the ambassador with regard to capturing of various types of fish. It was also nice to note that local businessman Jerry Kramer has been given the title of honorary Peace Corps volunteer.

P1 Garden girls invade Arno
The KIO Club of Majuro, responding to women on Arno, Arno, showed up recently like the calvary coming over the hill in a movie with wheelbarrows and related gardening tools to spur on the good work of the ladies on Majuro’s neighboring atoll. The MIMRA vessel Jolok transported the goodies to Arno along with the KIO women: Christine Domnick, Tatiana Sawej, Francyne Jacklick, Grace Abon, Cathy Ralph, Adena Reimers, Monique Graham and Phaedora Harris.

P5 License to find your own plate
Looking to buy a new car? That’s easy enough. Just stop by at one of the local car dealers on Majuro. Looking for a license plate to register your new car? Not so easy, as you have to scavenge the dump or maybe a car garage to find an old car that still has its license plate intact. Marshall Islands Police Department has been out of license plates for some time.

P12 Sneaky Journal
One reader of the Journal recently made an observation that pierced the heart of the paper’s integrity. “In a way you guys are sneaky, just like Continental,” he said. Our interest piqued, we offered, “How so?” “Well,” came the explanation, “the airline puts on its schedule that it arrives at 7:50 Friday nights, but they’re always 15 or 20 minutes early. They know they publish a later arrival so it can’t be said they are late. They do this so they get a better rating for schedule performance.” “So what’s that got to do with the Journal,” we asked. “You guys put on your paper that the day you come out is Friday, but actually you distribute on Thursdays. This is lying in a way. But I don’t care. I buy the Journal on Thursday, but I never read any of it until Friday. I don’t want to be a cheat like you guys.”
