P2 A minor problem
The day is Sunday. It could be any Sunday. The time is around noon. The occasion Sunday movie matinee for (supposedly) kids. The question: Do you know know what else your kids are doing beside just watching the shows? Sure, you say. What else could they do besides munching on popcorn, drinking colas, chewing gums, elbowing their friends and neighbors on the benches or just talking. Children in this age bracket do those sort of things. But do you know, too, that many of those kids are also doing something else that is a little unusual for their ages? What, you ask? They smoke, that’s what! And not so lightly either. A typical Sunday afternoon, about six cartons of class A cigarettes all went up in smoke by these kids or about 1,200 pieces of cigarettes. At five cents a piece, that’s a lot of money to spend for smoking… —Akio Heine

P1 Typhoon batters Majuro
Typhoon Axel saved the worst for last, inundating Delap to the airport with high waves as the storm moved by Majuro on a collision course with Kili and Jaluit.Buy early morning hours Wednesday in Majuro, Axel’s wind began dropping from the 60 knots of Tuesday. But high waves hit about 5:30 Wednesday morning, sweeping across the narrow islands and flooding homes, gardens and cars. Salt water and debris littered the road from Delap to well beyond the airpot. The road was impassible and no flights were going in or out of the airport Wednesday. One of the worst hit was the Lanwi complex, which was still under two feet of water at 8:30am. “This is the first time I’ve ever seen waves like this here,” said Lena Tiobech as she stood in knee-deep water outside her house.
P2 US: N-compensation settled by Compact
The United States government considers the compensation it paid to the Marshalls for nuclear test damages to have settled all claims, both past and future. In response to public comments from the Nuclear Claims Tribunal that the $45 million it has will not be adequate to fully compensate Marshallese nuclear test victims, US Ambassador William Bodde released this week the official position of the US government on the matter: “…Under the (Section 177) Agreement, the United States Government agreed to provide $45.75 million for whole or partial payment of monetary awards made by the Nuclear Claims Tribunal. Article X of the Section 177 Agreement made it clear that this was to be the final settlement of all claims against the United States.”
P3 Chief Justice: Crime rise ‘frightening trend’
A dramatic rise in violent crime in the Marshall Islands, and particularly the increasing use of guns, is “a frightening trend,” the Chief Justice of the High Court told the Journal. Criminal cases — for everything from murder to assaults to burglary to rape — have jumped 65 percent between 1988 and 1991.
“The court is concerned about the alarming rise in crime,” Chief Justice Neil Rutledge said.
