Parking stress at AKIA

Airport parking is a mess and will continue to be so for the foreseeable future as construction gets moving on what is now the “former” parking lot.

With the main parking lot at Amata Kabua International Airport fenced off as of last week, airport customers are parking just about anywhere they can find a space. For the first week after the parking lot closure, this meant cars and trucks lined the lagoon side of the road near the terminal, causing traffic tie-ups due to the narrowness of the road in some places where people parked.

Earlier this week, orange cones were put along the lagoon side road on the approach to the terminal, by the terminal and past it to the Ports Authority security booth indicating these are now “no parking” zones — which will further complicate the parking picture, though most likely improve safety without cars parked along the lagoon seawall.

Meantime, the purpose of the closure of the parking area is to allow work to begin on construction of the AKIA domestic terminal, which is expected to take up much of the existing parking area.

Pacific International Inc. is the contractor for the airport. The consultant engineering company is Macgraf Engineering & Construction of the Philippines.

PII is expected to develop landfill to expand the current airport area for a new parking lot to be built near the domestic terminal.
