In preparation for the upcoming school year, soon-to-be high school juniors joined a summer job project providing training in carpentry and auto mechanics.
“We chose this program to learn how to be carpenters and mechanics,” said Konkon Bokna, a Marshall Islands High School student in the program.
The group of about 40 students is learning in both vocational areas under the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) program sponsored by the Public School System. The students are from MIHS, Life Skills Academy and Laura High School.
In carpentry, the students are learning to repair damaged wooden objects, including furniture and stairways.
They are working with a variety of hand tools such as hammers, drills, and saws.
Due to safety requirements for using the tools and performing carpentry work, the group uses safety gear and follows safety rules. “We have to be careful every single moment just in order to protect ourselves from getting any injuries,” said Bokna.
The mechanic class is working on car and other engines, giving the students hands-on experience with repairing engines.
