A massive project to fix the drainage system in Majuro is underway following a groundbreaking ceremony in Rita on Tuesday this week.
Local company AC Construction has been awarded the contract for the project, which is projected to take 140 days to complete. The work will be concentrated on the drainage system on the Majuro main road spanning from Rita onwards to the Amata Kabua International Airport.
“We have waited a long time to kickoff this project,” James Myazoe, II, from the Project Management Unit at Public Works said of the project. It is funded by the World Bank through the Urban Resilience Project.
URP’s Safeguard Officer Alfred Alfred, Jr. said cooperation between the landowners and the community will be vital for the project. AC Construction Representative Damien Jacklick added that their local company, which he said has been servicing the people of the Marshall Islands for over 30 years, thrives from community projects such as the one being christened.
“One of the anticipated challenge we’ll run into is identifying outfalls that have been blocked off with the construction of seawalls,” a member of Public Works told the Journal. “We will definitely need the cooperation of landowners and the community on this project.”
