P1 Kwajalein leaders reaffirm opposition to Compact
Kwajalein leaders are lining up against the Compact of Free Association which is to be voted on September 7. Yesterday, Kwajalein Mayor Alvin Jacklick said he wanted to be the first mayor to come out against the Compact. Also, yesterday, Kwajalein Senator Ataji Balos described the Compact as “bad.” Balos cited the military use terms, the compensation, lack of jobs and bad treatment by military as the basis of his views.

P1 At last, plenty of water
Kids in Majuro took advantage of heavy rains to skate on pieces of plywood on the back road in Uliga. Public Works now reports the water conditions are “normal.” The reservoirs reportedly have 16 million gallons of water, nearly full capacity.

P2 Rongelap Senator Anjain against 177
Rongelap Senator Jeton Anjain said he is for the Compact of Free Association but against the 177 agreement to settle nuclear testing claims. Because nuclear claims are bound up with the Compact, he must say no to the package. Anjain resigned as minister of Health Services because of his disagreement with the government on the 177 issue.

P4 President honored
Women’s groups from Majuro threw a party to honor President Amata Kabua following the June 25 signing of the Compact. A Laura group serenaded. President Kabua at the electronic organ with his band returned the favor. Captain Moses Cama played ukulele and Fred Pedro, guitar.

P5 Majuro cable TV plugs in
Cable television will soon be a reality in Majuro. Alfonso Diaz, director of the newly formed Marshalls Broadcasting Company, said that all of the equipment has arrived and he expects the company to be operational by August 1. Victor Milne, a partner in MBC, hopes to see all of the cable run and completed within two weeks. MBC plans to offer 12 channels, including ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, ESPN, HBO, Discovery Channel, the Disney Channel and others.

P15 Bodde: Difficult challenges ahead
Before departing Majuro, US Ambassador William Bodde told the Journal that one of the most significant accomplishments of the Marshall Islands during his two-year term was the attainment of membership in the United Nations. Bodde noted that he was the first US envoy with the rank of ambassador to be stationed in the Marshalls.

P1 Fisheries win
The United States government and tuna fishing industry have agreed to triple the amount of money they are paying for fishing in the Pacific. The US offer to pay $63 million a year so its purse seiners can fish in the Pacific is triple the $21 million annual payment under the existing treaty.

P3 Nemra wins second in 200m
Marshall Islands runner Haley Nemra took second place in the 200-meter dash at last week’s Oceania Championships in Cairns, Australia. She and runner Timi Garstang are leaving Australia this week for England, where they will prepare for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games that open in London later this month.
