Chief Moissa to play tough

P1 Majuro milk factory opens I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream. To quiet things down a little the Pacific Maid milk and ice cream factory was opened here last Friday. Thousands of kids were on hand and a good portion of the adult community felt like kids for the event. The grand opening is the culmination of a project designed to provide better health for the children of the Marshalls through better nutrition. President Amata Kabua and First Lady Emlain enjoyed a sample at the milk factory grand opening.

P1 Justice system a mess, says attorney It doesn’t happen very often and it is especially rare when the President is sitting next to you. But Bar Association President and Public Defender David Strauss didn’t pull any punches as he leveled a stinging critique of the Marshalls criminal justice system at the swearing in ceremony for new Judge Ralph Kondo last Thursday.

P1 Crack down wanted A new police chief has taken over the reigns of the Marshall Islands Department of Public Safety and he says he is ready to reorganize the Majuro and Ebeye force. “If they want a tough police chief, if they want a real police force, they’ll get it,” said new chief Jose Moissa from his office at the dilapidated police station.

P2 No free ride Nobody will get another free ride on an airplane if new police chief Jose Moissa has anything to say about it. “We’ve beefed up airport security,” he said, adding that it is a federal offense to attempt to get on a plane without proper documents. Last month, a Marshallese youth hopped over the fence at the airport and, with no ticket or boarding pass, was allowed onto a Honolulu-bound Continental flight.

P1 RMI, watch out! Palau is gearing up for the Micro Games and athletes from the other Micronesian islands will have to be ready for tough competition, according chairman of the Micro Games Council, Bill Sakovitch of Saipan. Palau sent six wrestlers to Saipan for a tournament late last month. “They beat us, they will be tough,” is Sakovitch’s take on the Palauan wrestlers who have been working out since last year under the seasoned coaching of Marshallese wrestling champ Francis “Sleepy” Kintaro.

P7 Rongelap workers cautioned A former Bikini Atoll worker issued a warning to workers who may take jobs working on the Rongelap cleanup and rehabilitation project now that work is about to commence on the northern atoll. John M. Milne, who worked at Bikini in the 1970s and heads the Marshall Islands Radiation Victims Association, said he is concerned for the people who may go to Rongelap and work.

P19 Big Mac attack If you’re into McDonald’s style food but you’re stuck in Majuro, you’ll be happy this weekend. That’s because the basketball boys are bringing in 500 Big Macs from Honolulu on Saturday’s Continental Micronesia flight. Ticket sales have been brisk, so if you want a Big Mac, be sure to buy one ahead of Staruday. The pickup place for the famous burgers is at Gibson’s in the alcove by Amro Mon Kuk.

P13 Playing the money game High Court Chief Justice Carl Ingram a few years ago caused a stir of consternation at the courthouse when, upon assuming the mantle of leader, he ordered “computer games” deleted from computers in the courthouse system. The increase in productivity was staggering, and courthouse employees adjusted to restricting computer use to courthouse business. It was a welcome change. Transport ahead a few years and the computer “game” problem, while not infecting the courthouse corner, has spread its culture of time wasting to new heights. From solitaire to motorcycle racing, to shooting monsters on the prowl, computeritis is diagnosed on too many screens. The latest suggestion from the resident trash guru, Roger Cooper, is guaranteed not to endear him to the rank and file of the governmental computer army. Cooper suggests we follow the Chief Justice’s example and do away with all games. Then, the argument goes, we could focus on playing with government money, an activity we have all demonstration an excellent ability to engage in.
