Using equipment donated by the non-profit organization Salad Days of Skateboarding, and the distribution company Tum Yeto, youth on Ebeye are learning the basics of skateboarding.
In collaboration with community leaders on Ebeye, the skateboards were brought by former Peace Corps volunteer (Kosrae 2004-2007) Nathan Fitch, who is on island filming for a Public Broadcast Service (PBS) supported documentary, Essential Islanders.
As can be seen from the photos, the availability of skateboards generated a good deal of interest from the younger generation on Ebeye last week.
If there is sufficient community interest, perhaps a skate park can be built in the future, said Fitch.
He is the director/producer of two island-focused feature films: Island Soldier (about Kosraen Army veterans and their families) and Iakwe: Hello, Goodbye (premiered June 17 a the Bentonville Film Festival, it tells a real life story of a door-to-door salesman who by chance knocks on the door of his biological Marshallese family in Arkansas).
