India-RMI agree on aid plan

In Tokyo in the lead up to the PALM declaration, Ambassador of India to RMI Sibi George, left, and Marshall Islands Foreign Minister Kalani Kaneko, right, signed the new aid agreement as President Hilda Heine looks on.

The Economic Times of India described the aid projects as including the construction of a community sports center, airport terminal, and two community centers through India’s annual grant-in-aid. India is also reported to be working on providing desalination and dialysis units to address healthcare needs here.

The signing between India Ambassador Sibi George and Minister Kaneko was witnessed by President Hilda Heine. It was held at the Embassy of India in Tokyo on the eve of the Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting with Japan Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

During the meeting with Ambassador George, President Heine expressed her gratitude to India for the strong and growing support the Marshall Islands continues to receive from India and said she looks forward to continued dialogue and cooperation.

President Heine witnessed what her office described as “a significant step between the Republic of the Marshall Islands and India’s enduring friendship and cooperation” — the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two countries. The agreement will lead to a series of community development projects aimed at enhancing the quality of life for the communities of Ailuk, Arno, Mejit and Wotje.

“Today marks a significant milestone in the enduring friendship and cooperation between the RMI and the Republic of India,” said Kaneko. “This MoU is not just a document but a symbol of our shared vision for a brighter, more prosperous future for all our people.”
