The Kwajalein Atoll Local Government has updated its solid waste management plan 2026-2030 and the result was handed over to Mayor Hirata Kabua and council members last week on Ebeye.
Recognizing the “significant milestone” of completion of the updated waste management plan by KALGov’s Solid Waste Management Team, Mayor Hirata and his team turned the moment into a photo op and small ceremony to recognize the work put into management plan.
It is the first update since 2018, when the plan was last approved.
The key areas of the plan include:
- Update to the 2018 plan: Features the latest situational analysis of solid waste on Kwajalein, along with an actionable strategic roadmap.
- Key focus areas: Spells out the current situation of solid waste on Kwajalein Atoll, outlines current container deposit legislation (CDL) recovery rates, sets clear targets, and recommends strategic action plans.
- Collaborative efforts: Reflects joint contributions from key stakeholders, including the RMI EPA, Kwajalein Atoll Development Authority, Kwajalein Atoll Joint Utilities Resource (KAJUR), and the RMI Climate Change Directorate.
KALGov staff also recognized Ebeye Public Works Director Doster Kabua for contributing to the management plan update.
