P1 Marshall Islands Fishing Tournament
The members of the winning billfish boat in the First Marshall Islands Fishing Tournament posed with their trophies following the awards ceremony Monday night. The team members were: Mobe Lorennij, Maikili Tunivambea, Nokko Kabua, and Wally Milne.

P1 President Kabua to endorse the Compact today
President Amata Kabua will make a major policy speech June 17 at the Marshall Islands High School graduation ceremony and every indication is that he will endorse the Compact of Free Association, probably strongly. The President told the Protestant Youth Rally on Sunday that the Compact was “the only way” for the Marshalls.

P8 AMI charter points way to Fiji service
Last week, Air Marshall Islands carried out its first international charter operation, a charter for the Nauru Phosphate Commission. The flight carried Tuvaluan phosphate workers and their families between Nauru and Funafuti, the capital of Tuvalu. Fiji’s Air Pacific used to serve Tuvalu with 748s until it switched to jets. Tuvalu now has only infrequent regular service with smaller aircraft.

P3 Hospital looks for trained Marshallese
Majuro hospital has numerous staffing needs but it cannot find skilled Marshallese to fill the positions so it is hiring outside medical professionals. Hospital administrator Russell Edwards said “there are jobs here. You don’t have to compete if you have the training. You can just walk in. If there were qualified Marshallese, we would hire them.” Assistant Chief Nurse Salome Lani said the hospital is in the process of hiring new nurses: Four from Fiji, one from the Philippines, one from Kiribati, two from Kosrae and one from Pohnpei. The latter three are graduates of the CMI Nursing School. Dr. Masao Korean, the medical chief of staff, said he and other staff go to local high schools encouraging seniors to study medicine “because we need Marshallese doctors so badly.”

P16 Hawaii students taste island life
Eleven students from Maryknoll High School in Hawaii arrived on Majuro last Monday for their second annual students mission to Assumption High School. They would love to continue the program, said Ted Stepp, student coordinator and a member of the Theology Department at Maryknoll.

P1 Mathlynn wins gold in Samoa
At the Oceania championships in Samoa earlier this month, 15-year-old Mathlynn Jacob-Sasser won the gold medal in her weight class, beating weightlifters from Australia and Fiji. Seventeen-year-old Lomina Tibon took silver in the junior women’s division.

P9 New generation of jaki-ed weavers
The Ailinglaplap extension of the Majuro Weavers Apprenticeship program is a huge success, with master weaver Susan Jieta returning from a. Week-long stay on Aerok last Friday with 10 jaki-ed (clothing mats) in her luggage. “The quality of the mats the women are making is very good,” Susan said. The program is being coordinated by the University of the South Pacific’s Majuro Campus.
