P1 Nitijela asks questions of MIATLP lawyer
In a long Nitijela committee meeting, citizens listened to Marshall Islands Atomic Testing Litigation Project lawyer Richard Gerry being questioned for over five hours as Nitijela members asked questions ranging from the 177 Section to the MIATLP case to his and his staff salaries. Gerry answered questions concerning the possible success or failure of the MIATLP cases if the Compact is approved. Gerry argued that not only the 177 Section is an obstacle to success of the cases now in courts but said the money in the 177 is inadequate.
P1 MBC jumps into 3rd place at HIB Tournament
With one day remaining in the 1983 Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament, Marshalls Billfish Club has jumped to third place with 733 points. August 12, Wally Milne caught a 173.5 pound marlin. The team captain Tom Michels landed a 385 pound marlin the day before.

We always find ourselves at Nitijela listening or watching each day’s session. If you list to WSZO, you don’t know what you miss. WSZO broadcasts only goring stuff. The juicy stuff is not aired. For example, if you go there, you will have a chance to observe your own senator speaking or in some cases doze off…Anyway, Senators Beaja Peter and Hemos Jack announced on the floor that the Compact is given to the Marshall people by god himself. It is nice to know God converses with these two legislators. We wonder who’s on the side of those who have announced that they oppose the Compact. —Akio Heine

P4 A major reshuffle
How’s this for a massive resignation at one time? The comptroller and general manager of Tobolar, the comptroller for PII, the comptroller for PII/McConnell Dowell Joint Venture, the comptroller for Pacific Wheels, the comptroller of Marshalls Insurance, and the comptroller for Pacific Unique Travel have all resigned their positions and the resignations have been accepted. Sounds like a lot until you realize that it all boils down to just one guy: Kevin Ake. According to Kevin, he is still on board but training Mike Slinger (formerly of Deloitte Touche and operator of the Yacht Club)to take over.

P10 Doctors restore smiles
Medical history was made in Majuro last week with the first two total knee replacements conducted at Majuro hospital. An orthopedics team organized by Canvasback Missions replaced knees, fixed a baby’s clubroot , and provided services to more than 100 local residents in their first week of a two-week visit.
P16 Marshall Islands history book makes history
The first comprehensive history of the Marshall Islands from a Marshallese perspective has been published by Bess Press of Honolulu and will be going into use as a textbook for high schools in the Marshall Islands. At 526 pages, the hardcover presentation titled “Etto nan Ran Kein: A Marshall Islands History” is a milestone effort to present the story of the Marshall Islands from pre-history.
P26 USP’s Ailinglaplap weavers graduate
Everyone in the village of Aerok, Ailinglaplap wore a proud smile last month as 10 young ladies graduated from a four-month University of the South Pacific Master Weavers’ Apprenticeship program. During the ceremony, master weaver Terse Timothy thanked all the Ailinglaplap Iroij, the local government, and the University for supporting the program, which saw the youth each create at least one ‘jaki-ed’ (clothing mat). Acting Mayor Juda Menwe also praised the program, according to master weaver Susan Jieta who flew to Aerok for the ceremony.
