The second annual Majuro Airport Safety Fair was held last week, with everyone associated with the airport joining in and students from local high schools getting a hands-on experience with everything related to the airport.

Students from Life Skills Academy and Assumption High School went through check in, screening, and departure routines, along with getting a first-hand look at AMI’s new Cessna SkyCourier.

Firemen demonstrated their gear and skills for the students.

“The purpose of the Annual Safety Fair is to showcase the importance of safety and how it’s the foundation of everything we do in our operations,” said United Airlines Majuro Manager Ben Wakefield in a social media post. “From checking in, to passenger screening, to boarding from the gate, and inspection inside and outside the aircraft. It’s not just United, it is also our partners at the airport, and our passengers as well. It takes a community to work together and follow strict policies to make sure we go home the same way we came to work.”

This year’s safety fair let people experience the operation.

“After each step, they were met with presentations and Q&A sessions as to why we do what we do,” said Wakefield. “Why you cannot take your Grandma’s one liter of coconut oil in your carry-on but can have it in your check in bag; why you get a pat down when the alarm goes off, to name a few. When you understand the why, it makes it easier for you and your family when you travel and be safe overall.”

Wakefield thanked the many partners that supported the Safety Fair, including the RMI Ports Authority, United staff from Guam, Majuro, and headquarters, Directorate of Civil Aviation, Air Marshall Islands, Red Cross, Ministry of Health and Human Services, and AKIA Cafe.
