Hilda reels in climate aid

Marshall Islands Foreign Minister John Silk, President Hilda Heine and Jerry Velasquez, Director of the Green Climate Fund’s Division of Mitigation and Adaptation, met during the Forum meeting in Tuvalu in mid-August.

At the margin of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIFS) Leaders meeting last week in Tuvalu, President Hilda Heine met with Jerry Velasquez, Director of the Green Climate Fund’s Division of Mitigation and Adaptation. The meeting was to discuss the on-going GCF program, in particular the Water and Coastal Adaptation Program in the Marshall Islands.

President Heine expressed interest in conducting an assessment to identify potential areas for reclamation projects.

Velasquez suggested the government can request some project preparation support from GCF to see if this fits the requirements. He also suggested the RMI government develop a country program for the GCF so a list of priority projects can be determined.

They also discussed ways to increase capacity through RMI’s readiness program within the country.
