Japan funds ship, fuel

Foreign Minister Casten Nemra, President David Kabua and Japan Ambassador Norio Saito at signing of grant agreements for ship and fuel.

Foreign Minister Casten Nemra and Japan Ambassador Norio Saito signed an exchange of notes last Thursday for two grants that will fund a new cargo-passenger ship valued at $8.2 million and purchase of diesel fuel valued at $2.7 million.

Ambassador Saito emphasized the Ninth Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM9) commitments toward the RMI, including grant assistance for the cargo-passenger ship and diesel fuel. He stated that “marine transportation is literally a lifeline in the Marshall Islands in terms of human security.” He expressed his appreciation for the cooperation extended by the RMI government.

Minister Nemra offered his gratitude to Japan Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga for the on-going support and reiterated RMI’s commitment in continuing the “kizuna” (close relationship) between the two nations.

The signing ceremony was held at the Cabinet and attended by President David Kabua, Works Minister Jiba Kabua, Transportation Secretary Phil Philippo, MEC CEO Jack Chong Gum, and staff members of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade as well as the Embassy of Japan.

Saito said the grant of a cargo/passenger ship and diesel fuel was announced by Prime Minister Suga in the bilateral meeting held with Acting President Christopher Loeak during the recent PALM9.

Japan and RMI have been diplomatic partners since 1988.
The Japan ambassador said his government hopes that the two grant aid projects will help foster the over 100-year historical ties between the two countries.
