P1 Budget FY1988 The newly passed budget for the RMI allocates $70,322,100 for expenditures during the period October 1-September 30 next year.

P4 Diet bet to be set After two years of enjoying the fine Majuro eateries and beer halls, the fat guys are going to do it again. Diet is what they are doing. Remember the big diet contest where Minister Charles Domnick edged local favorite OK Davis by a half pound after losing 52.5 pounds in a mere 60 days? Charlie walked away with over a thousand bucks for his great effort. Can he repeat the performance? All you slobs out there, be at the fat guys meeting at the Yacht Club Saturday at noon. Rules will be drawn up and everyone can sign up there.

P7 New school planned The Ministry of Education announced plans to construct a new elementary school to house about 400 students who are waiting to get into school here in the capital. Migration into the capital has resulted in a crisis for the elementary school department. Both Rita and Delap elementary schools are full and parents are demanding that their children be allowed to attend. RES has about 290 students on its waiting list and DES has 120. A new school is hopefully to be built in Rairok.

P15 Make him a general A gang of senators from Kwajalein are attempting to interfere with the promotion system of the United States Army. Senators Ataji Balos, Imada Kabua and Hermios Kibin introduced a resolution to Nitijela commending USAKA commanding officer Col. Richard Chapman for his warm and sincere relationship with the people of the Marshalls. They said the relationship between the US and the Marshalls in regard to the use of Kwajalein as “mutually beneficial” and urged the US Army to not only keep Col. Chapman around for as long as possible, but to jack up his status in the army to brigadier general. It wasn’t so long ago that the same three gentlemen from the Marshalls were actually occupying the Kwajalein army base in a head-to-head confrontation with military officials. Chapman came into the fray near the end of the problem and apparently did an excellent job calming off both sides of the argument.

P15 Jimmy basketball MVP Jimmy Matayioshi took most valuable player honors at the close of Ebeye’s most recent basketball season. He picked up MVP status for garnering the most points and rebounds.

P1 Robert moves on Robert Reimers died Sunday morning in Honolulu at Straub Hospital, just a few days short of his 89th birthday. Robert was a one-of-a-kind person — as US Navy Commander Frank Avila remarked several years ago recalling his friendship with Robert in the late 1940s, “he was one of those gifted people you meet once in a lifetime.” An outwardly unassuming man, Robert was a commoner who created the Marshalls’ first corporate dynasty — the largest family-owned business in the nation — from his own energy, sweat, perseverance, good humor and vision.

P8 Goodbye Wednesday this week passed quietly into history. But it marks more than the end of the government’s fiscal year. It was the final day of use by the Ports Authority of the two venerable field trip ships, the Micro Chief and the Micro Palm, which the government plans to decommission shortly. This means that government shipping service to the outer islands will be primarily dependent on just two ships, the Ribuk Ae and the Jeljelat Ae. Translation: In the short term, difficult times for outer islands trade and travel.

P1 Kabin Meto’s year Team Kabin Meto beat Likiep, Majuro and Kwajalein on its way to capturing the Bank of Marshall Islands 10th Ralik Ratak Shootout Invitational Basketball Tournament. They banked the BOMI-provided $1,000 cash prize for being the top men’s team in the RMI.

P3 Nitijela approves $137 million budget The Nitijela approved the second highest budget in RMI history for the new fiscal year that started Thursday this week. The $137.4 million budget was officially signed into law by Speaker Jurelang Zedkaia. There was only one floor amendment yadeto the budget bill. Minister Ruben Zackhras moved floor amendment to take $300,000 from the Ministry of Education’s professional development account and put it in the school lunch program account. That pumped the lunch program from $100,000 to $400,000.
