Justice Minister Wisely Zackhras signed two memorandums of understanding concerning the Pacific Policing Initiative and the Pacific Police Support Group, which detail arrangements for Pacific Policing Deployments.
The purpose of these documents is to boost law enforcement capability and cooperation across the Pacific. It is an Australian-supported regional police initiative.
It aims to help member nations meet law and order needs, respond to one another in times of crisis, and tackle transnational threats, including drug trafficking, illegal fishing, economic crimes, cybercrime, natural disasters, and major event security.
These documents have been ratified and reaffirmed by the members of the Pacific Islands Chiefs of Police, including Australia, New Zealand, Samoa, Tonga, Palau, Papua New Guinea, the Federated States of Micronesia and now Marshall Islands.
MIPD officers who underwent training under Pacific Policing Support Group in Australia are due for deployment to the upcoming Pacific Islands Forum meeting in Palau in early September.
