The memory of fallen Marshallese soldier SSG Solomon Sam is bound to live on through the creation of a new scholarship in his name.

The initiative is the brainchild of the local US military veterans group Post 22. The scholarship will be given at the College of Marshall Islands.

The scholarship will be the second installment honoring Sam at the college, the first being the SSG Solomon Sam Multipurpose Sports Center.

Following the creation of the new scholarship, Post 22 members met and received verbal consent from Sam’s older Sister Freeda Barai Sam and family members at the college last week. Sam was a student at CMI prior to entering the US Armed Forces.

While details of who will be eligible for the scholarship are being ironed out by Post 22, the first fundraiser dedicated to the scholarship will be held on Memorial Day May 27 at the SSG Sport Center. The fundraiser is open to the CMI family and the public. Post 22 members will showcase their barbecue skills in the event and provide free food to participants.
