Marshall Islands High School was pronounced the 2016 Education Week’ debate champions following a heated battle of wits with runner up Laura High School last Thursday at the International Conference Center in Delap.

A seven all-women judge panel concluded that MIHS debaters Kina Jordan and Julius Edward held a stronger argument against their opponents from Laura Herma Lakojje and Eugene de Guzman. The four finalists are seniors in their respective schools.

Prior to the final competition, multiple debates took place throughout the day among students from various schools with each team being eliminated based on their overall performances. The proposition of the day focused on whether the RMI government should provide quality potable water to all RMI citizens. The MIHS winning team argued in favor of the proposition.

Assumption School senior Atina Schutz was named overall top debater. She and the four finalists received school supplies following the conclusion of the program.

Vote of no confidence, government needs to provide water to the outer islands, where is the school lunch program and bingo were assorted topics brought during the final debate.

Students and participants enjoyed a pizza treat as part of the program.
