The RMI’s 22nd high school student to head to a United World College school abroad was recognized recently by Taiwan Ambassador Herbert Hsu and Education Commission Dr. Natalie Nimmer.

Richston Orgen, Jr., an 11th grader at Seventh Day Adventist School in Delap, was nominated by the UWC National Committee of the Marshall Islands to attend UWC South East Asia. The school late last month confirmed Richston’s acceptance for the two-year scholarship program at the international school in Singapore.

Both the Taiwan Embassy and PSS assisted the UWC National Committee with supporting its Selection Day program held at CMI in January this year when a group of students from different high schools were evaluated for the scholarship.

Richston is the 22nd Marshallese to attend one of the 18 UWC schools worldwide, and the fourth SDA student to win a scholarship to the high school international baccalaureate diploma program.

Three Marshallese students are slated to graduate from UWC schools later this month: Former Majuro Coop High School student Layla Tibon from UWCSEA (the same school that Richston will attend), former SDA High School student Kiyo Kaneko from UWC Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and former Coop student Nelu Jelke from UWC ISAK Japan.

Former Assumption student Haileeana Lokiar is finishing her first year at UWCSEA and will continue to her senior year next school year.
